* A winch is a mechanical device that provides resistance or torque to a rope or wire rope to allow a load to be pulled. Smaller winches are frequently used in the form of winch handles that can be attached directly to a pulley block or drum. Winch drums are designed with surface grooving or fluting to minimize rope wear and extend the life of the rope. Fairleads are often used at the end of the winch line and at termination points of wire rope. * A hand-cranked winch consists of two parts: a winch drum and a line lead screw, both mounted on an axle (see diagram below). The line lead screw is sometimes referred to as a "worm" because it has an inclined plane wrapped around it, which may be either right-handed or left-handed, depending on how it is viewed. The winding drum is normally supplied with a grooved rim, which forms a groove for the rope as it passes over the drum. The drum is grooved on its circumference so that when the line becomes twisted, it may work its way through the grooves towards the free end. * It has an adjustable clutch that provides smooth control while operating.
